Abstract

This study examines the spatial transformation of Pakis Sub-district as a rural–urban area influenced by the urban expansion of Malang City. The research aims to identify the spatial distribution of rural–urban areas and analyze land use change over the past 15 years. A quantitative approach was applied through spatial–temporal analysis of LANDSAT and Sentinel-2 images (2010, 2014, 2020, and 2024). The Combined Urban-Rural Fringe Index (CUFI) using Nighttime Light, POI density, and NDVI was employed, while land conversion was analyzed with the Normalized Difference Built-Up Index (NDBI). Results indicate that rural–urban areas are concentrated in the western and central Pakis, with built-up land expanding nearly 400%, highlighting significant urbanization impacts from Malang City
